By Local Unnie

We listdown the necessary items while preparing for an oversea trip. This is not one of these necessary items but this is something you should check before going abroad. Since Koreans do travel a lot to Southeast Asia, I have decided to post on the best time to travel Southeast Asia.

The rainy season of Cambodia is from May to October. Especially in October, it rains on an average of 24 days, and the average rainfall drops to 318.9mm. The best time to travel Cambodia is from December to May, in which the temperature is maintained at 23°C, but the daytime difference is as large as 7°C to 10°C co bring something to put on. Even if you plan your visit during the rainy season, the maximum temperature is over 30° C so bring your sunglasses and sunscreen with you.

Because Indonesia is an archipelago of many islands, the weather is slightly different depending on the region. On average, it has rainy season from November to early February and has dry season from March to October.

Malaysia has a hot and humid climate. It is especially cool in the morning and evening, so you can feel the climate different from other Southeast Asian regions. From December to March and from June to September, East Malaysia with Kota Kinabalu is under a rainy season, in which there are short rainstorm. Only months April and May are dry. On the other hand, West Malaysia, where the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, is located is under a rainy season from July to October. Rain is pouring with a thunderstorm for one to two hours, but this is also stops immediately. From November to June is the best time to enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving.

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Myanmar is largely influenced by the monsoon and its weather is divides into three. From March to May, the average temperature is 33°C, which is very hot. From June to October, the average rainfall is 4000mm. Raincoat and umbrellas are essential because the it showers repeatedly. Because the sun shines again after the shower, it is better not to plan your schedule tight. From November to February, the average temperature in Myanmar is 25°C ~ 30°C, which is the golden time to travel the Myanmar. Yangon region is rainy from May to October, but Mandalay is relatively rain-free, so it is good to travel in the summertime.

Philippines (where I grew up)

Cagayan de Oro, Philippines

Philippines has rainy and dry seasons. Dry seaons from November to April and rainy seasons from June to October. The best time to travel the Philippines is from December to February since the humidity is at lowest level but prepare for the frequent occurrence of scorch. During the rainy season, about 20 typhoons will pass through the Philippines so avoid traveling the Philippines during the rainy season.

Singapore is hotter and moister than the summer in Korea. It has hottest dry season from May to August and  has rainy season from end of October to March but it rains all year round. As the rain suddenly pours out for a while, sit back in the café for a moment, or go around the one of the many shopping malls on Orchard Road.

The weather in Thailand is largely divided into wet season and dry season. From May to October, it is wet season, and from November to April, it is dry season. From November to February, it is best to travel because the average minimum temperature is 20°C and the maximum temperature is 31°C. Among different places of Thailand, Chiang Mai has the average minimum temperature of 14.2°C in January and the highest temperature of 29.4°C. The day-to-day difference of Chiang Mai is great but this place is perfect to enjoy sports such as trekking and golf. If you are planning to go to Thailand on a wet season, enjoy the night safari and overcome the wet weather in a good way. Bangkok has good weather from November to April, with the average temperature being the lowest in December. However, the day-to-day difference is great, so be sure to pack light cardigans. Moreover, Krabi is best visited between December and April.

Depending on the area you are visiting, you will experience different weather because Vietnam has tropical, subtropical, and temperate climtate. The terrain is also complicated and the weather changes greatly depending on the north and south, highlands and lowlands. The northern part of Ha Long Bay has a summer from May to October and a winter from November to April. In summer, it is humid and has little wind with an average temperature of 16°C to 23°C and it is fairly dry in winter. The central region of Da Nang is relatively humid. From May to September is the best time to travel, and at the end of September, it rains a lot. Ho Chi Minh has a humid and hot climate throughout the year. Summer is the warmest and wetest and it runs from May to November. It is winter from December to April, but the average temperature does not to below 27°C. Moreover, it is humid.
One at the time. One day, I hope I will complete all of these Southeast Asian countries. Until then, I shall update this post with the photos I took while traveling. And now, I will prepare for my next international trip to Vietnam! YAY! This will be my first time to travel abroad with my sister. 🙂
